VLC Has Reached 6 Billion Uploads And Implemented Automatic Generation Of Subtitles

The project Videolan announced that the VLC video player has surpassed significant milestones in terms of downloads. According to statistics from the project servers, the VLC player has been in operation since February 2005. The data reveals that for the Windows platform alone, there have been approximately 4.8 billion downloads, while MacOs users have accounted for 380 million downloads. Additionally, there have been 6.8 million downloads from the archive containing the original texts. It is important to note that the statistics do not include downloads for Linux, as most Linux users obtain the VLC player through their distribution’s repositories. The most popular version of VLC is currently 3.0.16, which has been downloaded 416 million times. In comparison, the latest release, version 3.0.21, has been downloaded 373 million times, version 3.0.20 – 370 million, version 3.0.19 – 51 million, and version 3.0 – 6.8 million.

In addition, Videolan demonstrated a new feature that enables automatic subtitle generation based on speech recognition and translation. This functionality utilizes open machine learning models that are executed locally on the user’s system.
