Aleksievich urged Belarusian authorities to stop “mass repressions”

More than 160 Belarusian writers, including the Nobel laureate Svetlana Aleksievich , called on the authorities to stop “mass repression” against the protesters. This was announced on Wednesday, November 18, by ” Interfax -West”. P >

The Union of Belarusian Writers has published an open letter stating that over the past 100 days, there has been a constant escalation of violence in the country. There have been no such repressions in Europe for the last 40 years: about 30 thousand people were arrested, more than four thousand were injured.

Basic human rights are being ignored in the country, the writers continue. All this leads to economic default, international isolation and the fall of Belarus “to the very bottom of the civilizational rating”.

The writers turned to officials “who have kept a sober mind.” “Until you plunge the country into an abyss of violence and general crisis, immediately stop the massive repressions and bullying of people who want change, admit your defeat and accept the will of the people,” the open letter says.

In Belarus, since August 9, actions against the official results of the presidential elections have continued. Alexander Lukashenko has been declared the winner, he has held this post since 1994. Protesters consider the results to be falsified.
