In Russia, scammers have developed a new “New Year” method of stealing money from bank accounts, reports newspaper “Kommersant” .
The essence of the scheme is as follows: attackers call a potential victim and introduce themselves as bank employees. Then they talk about a new currency deposit with an increased rate, which is not yet presented on the site, but can be opened by clicking on a special link. Outwardly, this site looks like a personal account in a bank, where the client enters his username and password, and his account immediately becomes available to fraudsters.
Earlier in December, the head of the information security department spoke about another scheme of deception “SerchInform” Alexey Drozd. First, a fictitious bank security officer calls the victim and warns of the call from law enforcement . followed by a call allegedly from the police, and the scammers are asked to name the card details, CVV and the code sent by SMS. Thus, attackers can withdraw all money from the card.
The total losses of Russians from telephone scammers in 2020 amounted to 66 billion rubles , online scammers stole 150 billion rubles from citizens in a year. Most of all, citizens trusted those who presented themselves as medical workers.
