The year 2020 has been the hottest recorded in France since the start of measurements, in 1900, Météo-France announced Tuesday, December 29 after an” extraordinary “year, which gives a new sign of climate change.
“The cooling this end of the year will not have changed anything. It is now official: with an average value over the whole country reaching 14 ° C , the temperature of the year 2020 is the hottest ever recorded, ahead of 2018 (13.9 ° C) “, the organization said on Twitter.
2020 was particularly marked by the succession of Mr. “hot” days, June and October excepted. Example: us… https://t.co/3ER7DQUeeR
In mid-December, Météo-France had already estimated this record to be probable, still awaiting complete data for the month of December to confirm it. Despite a “rather cool” start and end of December 2020, the month was on average quite mild (especially from the 14th to the 24th), not allowing the trend to be reversed.
A succession of “hot” months
The year 2020 thus ranks at the top of the podium, ahead of 2018 and 2014, with a series of extreme events throughout the year, from storms at the start of the year to episodes of exceptional rains in the fall, through two episodes of heatwave during the summer (from July 30 to August 1 st , then from August 6 to 13).
“Earlier this year, the country experienced its second hottest February in history, marked by several peaks of remarkable softness and numerous records, ”notes Météo-France. This year 2020 was marked by a succession of “hot” months, with the exception of June and October “relatively close to normal”.
Among the 10 hottest years in France since 1900, 9 belong to the 21st century:
2020, 2018, 2014, 2019,… https://t.co/O8akswg76i
Another sign of global warming: out of 120 years since national averages were measured, nine of the ten warmest years belong to the XXI e century, and seven, in the last decade. This warming faithfully mirrors that seen on a global scale, with the World Weather Organization estimating that 2020 is expected to be one of the three hottest years on record.
