Chief freelance otolaryngologist Ministry of Health of Russia , Director of NMITS otorhinolaryngology FMBA Nikolay Dayhes doubted that frequent symptoms of coronavirus – loss of smell and hearing – are mandatory in case of illness. He expressed this opinion in an interview with Medvestnik.
According to him, scientists need to get more information to assess the impact of coronavirus infection on the pathology of ENT organs, as well as to develop treatment algorithms. The Russian physician added that the information about the development of the infection that the specialists had at the beginning of the pandemic has undergone great changes.
Dyhes stressed that those who have suffered from COVID-19 often recover their sense of smell after one and a half to two months. Hearing recovery takes longer.
Earlier, doctors from the Mayo Clinic in the United States called the early symptoms of coronavirus prior to respiratory manifestations of COVID-19. Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can signal the disease, scientists say. However, doctors noted that these are not the most common symptoms and they can last only one day. In the case of COVID-19, nausea is followed by cough, fever, loss of taste and smell.
