An infectious disease specialist estimated increase in incidence of COVID-19 in Russia after New Year

After the New Year, an increase in the incidence of COVID-19 may occur. This forecast was presented by the President of the International Association of Specialists in the Field of Infections, the former chief freelance specialist Ministry of Health on infectious diseases Irina Shestakova in conversation with RIA Novosti .

According to her, during the holiday period, people will contact each other, including with elderly relatives. “Can you imagine distancing at the family table? (…) We seem to be isolated from each other in terms of work, but at the same time, if we do not observe [self-isolation] like this, we will go to our relatives, the elderly , we, of course, can infect, especially since we do not have such strict restrictions as in Europe, “Shestakova explained.

The specialist advised the authorities to adhere to a risk-based approach after the New Year holidays and make decisions to weaken or tighten restrictive measures, depending on the trends in the incidence. “Just take it and close everything – you must admit that people get tired of it too. And when they get tired, they make more and more mistakes,” she concluded.

In early December, a large-scale vaccination started in Russia. According to the latest data, every fiftieth person has become infected with the coronavirus in Russia, and every hundredth in the world. As of December 29, 27,002 new cases of infection were detected in the country. The total number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic was 3,105,037, 55,827 patients died.
