The leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un for the first time in 10 years refused the New Year’s TV address and sent the citizens of the country a New Year card with congratulations. He previously did so in 2011. This was reported by the DPRK Central Telegraph Agency.
At the same time Daily Mail reports that on Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang gathered thousands of people to celebrate the New Year. There was a festive fireworks display and a concert. The mass events took place amid the official absence of coronavirus cases in the country.
“From the bottom of my heart I wish all the families of the country further prosperity, great happiness. From the bottom of my heart I wish the beloved people prosperity. And in the coming year, I will fight more energetically for the approach of a new era, when the ideal and aspirations of our people are realized,” wrote Kim Jong Eun.
He also conveyed greetings to the people of the country and thanked those who believe in the party and support it.
North Korea has regularly stressed that the country does not need external assistance. There has allegedly not been a single case of coronavirus infection in the country for the entire time of the pandemic; it was allegedly only once suspected of having it.
