The 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, co-founder of the “Community of Peaceful People” Irishwoman Mairead Corrigan nominated a former employee US National Security Agency Edward Snowden , founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange and his informant Chelsea Manning. She listed the candidates for the award in her letter to The Nobel Committee , The Irish News reports .
“Each of them has shown an example of courage countless times in denouncing the illegal actions of governments that have resulted in millions of deaths, thus putting their own freedom and life at stake,” Corrigan wrote in the address.
She added that the self-sacrifice and dedication of Snowden, Assange and Manning demonstrate the greatness of the human spirit.
Corrigan noted that Snowden could not remain silent, knowing that the US government was illegally monitoring its citizens and the leaders of other countries, Assange revealed the facts about war crimes in Iran and Afghanistan, thus fulfilling his duty as a publisher, and Manning, being an American soldier in Iraq, she could not come to terms with the killing of civilians
