Pomegranate strengthens the immune system, has anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects, improves the condition of blood vessels and helps prevent the early development of dementia. The beneficial properties of the fruit were revealed in an interview with radio Sputnik dietitian Elena Solomatina .
According to her, this fruit contains a large amount of antioxidants and acids that effectively fight inflammation. Also, pomegranate prevents the destruction of cells of the cardiovascular system, helps to improve its condition and avoid heart attack and stroke. In addition, it helps lower blood cholesterol levels and prevents the early development of dementia. Also, pomegranate has a serious anti-tumor effect, especially associated with breast cancer.
Solomatina noted that to obtain the desired effect, pomegranates must be consumed every day, but in small portions – a quarter of the fruit or 30 grams of pomegranate juice is enough. “You need to understand that organic acids can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and cause an aggravation if someone already has certain problems,” the nutritionist warned, urging not to eat too much pomegranate. In addition, pomegranate can negatively affect the enamel of the teeth, so it is better to dilute the juice with water or drink through a straw, and then rinse your mouth.
In 2019, scientists found out that natural compounds in pomegranates and other fruits help to slow down certain age processes. Thus, urolithin A improves the functioning of mitochondria in skeletal muscle cells, which begin to lose strength and mass when they reach 50 years of age. It is formed in the human intestine when ellagitannins are supplied (found in grains and pomegranate juice).
