Doctors in Kirov removed a 300-gram lump of hair from the stomach of a 16-year-old girl. This is reported on the website of the regional government.
A Russian woman named Ekaterina Bornyakova was found to have a lump of hair with a diameter of 10 by 15 centimeters. She underwent abdominal surgery to remove the foreign body.
It turned out that Bornyakova had a rare disease – trichobezoar, when swallowed hair, nails or particles of undigested food accumulate in the stomach. As a result, the mass turns into a ball.
According to pediatric neurosurgeon Eduard Syrchin, this disease most often occurs in adolescent girls. “Over time, complaints of abdominal pain, a feeling of nausea, vomiting begin, the amount of food consumed becomes less than usual,” the doctor concluded.
Syrchin added that there had not been such cases in the hospital’s practice for more than ten years. The last time this happened was in 1999, when a 14-year-old girl was brought there, and a ball of hair weighing 900 grams was removed.
