The Association of Music Professionals (Recording Academy) has decided to postpone, due to pandemic, the Grammy Awards ceremony, the rewards of the American recording industry, initially scheduled for January 31 in Los Angeles.
The Recording Academy released Tuesday, January 5, a press release confirming the postponement of the event to March 14, , modifying the new date previously posted on its official website.
” The deterioration of the Covid situation in Los Angeles, with overwhelmed hospitals, overwhelmed emergency departments, and new recommendations from state and local governments convinced us that postponing the ceremony was the best thing e to do, “the organizers explained.
After being less hard hit than many other states Americans, California has seen the pandemic accelerate in its territory since the beginning of November. It is currently registering tens of thousands of new cases of coronavirus every day.
A ceremony in “pandemic” format
The organizers had already planned a ceremony in pandemic format, without an audience, with only the presenters and artists invited to perform during the broadcast, on national channel CBS, at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Nine times, singer Beyoncé was the top nominee, announced at the end of November, bringing her total to 79. “Queen Bey” is named for her duet with rapper Meghan Thee Stallion, titled Savage, as well as her surprise track, inspired by the movement born after the death of George Floyd, a black man suffocated by police officers during his arrest at the end of May. She is ahead of Taylor Swift, rapper Roddy Ricch and British singer Dua Lipa, each credited with six nominations.
The list of nominations was also struck by his absences, first of all that of the Canadian singer The Weeknd, but also of the Korean group BTS or the late rapper Pop Smoke, excluded from all the major categories.
Several others Awards ceremonies have already been postponed, including the Oscars, from February 28 to April 25.
