The political parenthesis is over for Agnès Buzyn. At least the electoral contests, the little phrases and the big speeches, the meetings at the Elysee, the leaflets distributed in the markets. At 58, the one who was Minister of Health for two and a half years, then unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Paris, leaves both the political world and France. Since January 4, the former doctor joined the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. She joined the office of the director general, the Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, she informed Agence France-Presse (AFP), confirming information from L’Opinion . Responsible for monitoring multilateral issues, she will represent this UN-dependent institution to the G7, the UN and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Since its resounding failure at municipal elections in June 2020 , the continuation of the career of M me Buzyn was a subject of questioning. What a future for the one who, more than any other, embodied both the failure of La République en Marche (LRM) in local elections, and the government’s inability to stop the Covid-19 epidemic, despite its promises ?

Universcience escapes him

For months, the former minister herself doubted. “I wonder what I’m going to do with my life,” she confided, dejected, at the end of the first round. After the second, she no longer answered reporters. She also did not attend the council meetings of the 17th th arrondissement, where she had been elected in June, but did not want to resign. Each time, she used the excuse of difficulties with the agenda, which increasingly annoyed the other elected officials.

For a while, the government kept the presidency of Universcience and the establishment warm for her. public which includes the Palais de la Découverte and the Cité des sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris. It would have been a kind of consolation prize, for having agreed to replace Benjamin Griveaux point-blank in the difficult municipal battle in Paris. But in December, the Council of Ministers finally officially entrusted the head of Universcience to Bruno Maquart, who until then had his own interim.

In the end, Agnès Buzyn chose a solution that takes her away from Paris, from the French political game which has hurt her so much, and brings her closer to her favorite world: health.

“I like when things go fast, challenges, “Cap, not cap”. So I’m served! I’m having fun. “In February 2020, when she had just been bombed as a candidate for mayor of Paris, the former Minister of Solidarity and Health shows herself perky. She has the feeling of having done her duty. An agreement seems in sight to settle the hospital crisis. As for the coronavirus, she alerted the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister in January to the danger of this epidemic and considers that she has “prepared everything” before leaving the ministry.
