Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the RUDN University, in a conversation with REN TV, assessed the danger of a new “British” strain of coronavirus detected in Russia.
According to the scientist, special measures will not be introduced in the country due to the detection of a new strain of COVID-19. According to him, if you adhere to all preventive measures, then it does not really matter how infectious the strain is.
The specialist recalled that in the UK they indicated a higher infectiousness of the new strain, but according to other criteria it does not differ from other variations of the virus. Voznesensky noted that vaccination or the formation of natural immunity should still be the main protection against infection.
On January 10, it became known that a Russian returning from the UK had contracted a new strain of coronavirus. According to the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova, the man had no symptoms of the disease, and now he no longer secretes the virus.
A new strain of coronavirus was first discovered in the UK in September 2020, but it began to spread actively in December. The changes affected the area of the spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus, which is responsible for attaching to cells located in the mucous membrane of the lungs and a number of other organs.
