A diamond like a meteorite found in Russia

A large diamond weighing 109 carats was found in Yakutia. The find was made on the Nyurbinskaya pipe on the first day of the new year. Russian diamond mining company Alrosa announced this in its Instagram .

The company noted that the discovered diamond is similar to the Chelyabinsk meteorite that fell to Earth on February 15, 2013. Alrosa recalled that among other things, they found the mineral olivine in the composition of the meteorite – a frequent inclusion for diamonds.

Alrosa is the world’s largest diamond producer. In addition to Yakutia, the company is mining in the Arkhangelsk region, it develops 11 kimberlite pipes and 16 placer deposits.

In August 2020, Alrosa’s subsidiary, Almazy Anabara, mined the largest colored diamond in the history of Russia, weighing 236 carats. The dimensions of the stone were 47x24x22 mm. The diamond is estimated to be 120-230 million years old.
