Burkina Faso: President Kaboré dissolves government

Prime Minister since January 2019, Christophe Dabiré was dismissed from his post. The procedure is usual after legislative elections largely won by the ruling party and its allies.

The President of Burkina Faso , Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, re-elected for a second term, on Wednesday 30 December dismissed Prime Minister Christophe Dabiré and dissolves the government, a usual procedure after the legislative elections.

“The president of the [Burkina] Faso decrees: the Prime Minister’s functions are terminated, the government is dissolved “, indicates the presidential decree sent to Agence France-Presse (AFP). No information has filtered out on the name of the future head of government or on the date of his appointment.

President Kaboré was re-elected in the first round for a second term on 22 November. The presidential election was coupled with the legislative elections, largely won by the ruling party and its allies.

The outgoing president of the Assembly is reappointed

Economist, former commissioner in charge of trade, competition and cooperation of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (Uemoa), Christophe Dabiré was appointed head of government in January 2019.

In the legislative elections, the People’s Movement for Progress (MPP, presidential party) won 56 out of 127 seats in the National Assembly, which it controls along with small allied parties. The outgoing President of the Assembly, Allasane Bala Sakandé, a close friend of President Kaboré, was reappointed on Monday.

Poor and landlocked country in West Africa of 20.5 million inhabitants, Burkina Faso has been plagued since 2015 by recurrent jihadist attacks that have left at least 1,200 dead and a million internally displaced. President Kaboré has vowed to bring “security and stability” to the country for his second and final term.
