The German Chancellor Angela Merkel appreciated the progress achieved EU and the UK Brexit deal, calling it historic. The corresponding statement is posted on site of the federal government.
Merkel welcomed the agreement reached between London and Brussels. “This is of historic importance,” the statement reads. The German leader thanked the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Chief EU Brexit negotiator Michelle Barnier and the entire negotiating team for the work done. She added that on December 28, members of the German Cabinet will study the text of the agreement and agree on Berlin’s position on it.
Earlier it became known that the UK and the EU reached an agreement on Brexit terms after months of negotiations. One of the main documents in the framework of the general agreement was the trade agreement, which provides for the mutual absence of duties and quotas.
The UK officially left the European Union on 1 February. The parties agreed on a transitional period until the end of the year, during which most of the EU laws continued to operate in the United Kingdom. If London and Brussels did not have time to conclude a new trade agreement by the end of December, the UK would no longer be part of the common European market, which in turn would lead to the introduction of customs borders between the country and the EU.
