Report on formation of Rocky Linux distribution, coming to replace CentOS

The Rocky Linux project aims to create a new free RHEL build that can take the place of classic CentOS published the first report. Some interesting points:

  • non-profit organization The Rocky Linux Foundation.
  • The project is planned to be published under the BSD license, but the issue has not yet been finally resolved and is being discussed in the community.
  • The main focus is on preparing the infrastructure for supporting the project and developing the first release, which is expected in the beginning of the second quarter of 2021. In the near future, we will publish a schedule for launching build systems, an infrastructure for automatic package building, a repository for testing packages, components for testing an installer.
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be used as the primary platform for launching build servers to simplify the maintenance and security of the infrastructure. The physical infrastructure is likely to be hosted at OSUOSL (Oregon State University Open Source Lab).
  • To organize assembly processes, it was decided to use Koji , Mock and MBS (Module Build Service), used in Fedora Linux.
  • developing scripts that will be used to download the sources of RHEL packages, rebrand and build using Koji and Mock toolkits.
  • The main tasks for the infrastructure team stand out:
    • Provide automated and secure builds of packages and distribution components that can be used for community testing without risk of compromise and violations of trust in the resulting packages.
    • Ensuring the integrity and security of the entire assembly chain and development processes (supply chain).
    • As independent as possible from individual vendors and platforms. Avoiding vendor binding.
    • Project transparency for the community.
  • More than 370 people have registered as volunteers and willing to support the project.
  • Several companies have expressed a desire to become sponsors of the project and are ready to provide developers, equipment, funding and cloud environments for the infrastructure.
  • Initially, the Slack service was used to organize the communication of the participants, but it is planned to replace it with its own server based on the open Mattermost platform.
  • Additional editions (SIG, Special Interest Groups) for desktops and laptops, advanced security, Kubernetes / Cloud Native deployments, minimal installation, storage creation and HPC are being considered.
