A heron rolled on the back of a hippopotamus in South Africa’s Kruger National Park and caught prey for lunch, reports The Sun.
Tourist Michelle Slater photographed the heron landing and then slowly rising above the water, standing on the hippo’s back.
“We sat and watched the hippos. A gray heron flew in and landed on the back of one of them. She stood on his back for a while while the animal defecated into the water. Then the heron began to track down small fish in the water. She plunged beak into the water and grabbed one of them, “Slater said.
According to the tourist, when the hippopotamus lifted its head out of the water, it seemed that the heron wanted to show off its catch before it swallowed the fish.
Hippos weigh up to 3.6 tons and are considered the heaviest land animals after elephants.
Previously it was reported that a US resident filmed a great blue heron, who swallowed a baby alligator at Lake Apopka, Orlando. “At first I thought it was a large fish or an amphibian – a big siren. But when I looked through the viewfinder of my camera, I realized that it was a large baby alligator,” she said.
