American journalist NBC channel Daniel Arkin assessed the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the country and tried to guess how it will affect the near future of the United States. His article was published on the channel website.
In particular, Arkin wondered how the virus “was able to bring the richest and most powerful country in the world to its knees” – the United States. In his opinion, the Americans expected many resources to be directed to fight the disease, but this did not happen. The journalist also referred to the words of one of the leading doctors that in the winter in the United States could be “the most serious public health crisis in history”.
In addition, he drew attention to the fact that the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the country over the past ten months is approaching 300 thousand. Moreover, if in the spring the main focus of the pandemic was the northeastern United States, especially New York, at the moment the death rate is increasing throughout the country.
According to the author, the pandemic has revealed many problems in the country. Among them are insufficient funding for hospitals, declining infrastructure in rural cities and poor neighborhoods, legislation that inhibits economic assistance, and the situation with health insurance. It was especially hard for communities of color, where systemic racism and economic inequality increased.
Arkin recalled that vaccination will begin in the near future, but drew attention to the fact that its results will not be visible until next year. “If Americans do not change their behavior, the weeks and months ahead will be filled with new deaths and despair, overcrowded hospitals and unemployment lines,” the journalist concluded, citing experts.
