Germany explained dangerous consequences of coronavirus mutations

The emergence of new mutations of the coronavirus can entail a number of dangerous consequences. This was told by the expert of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, deputy Bundestag , epidemiologist Karl Lauterbach, his words on Sunday, December 20, reports the RND portal.

As noted by Lauterbach, firstly, a new infection can lead to higher risks of infection, and secondly, to the emergence of new, even more dangerous variants of the virus.

“This is a kind of vicious circle: the more infections, the more opportunities for mutations and, consequently, more mutations. This, in turn, leads to more infections. This continues and continues,” – explained the specialist.

On December 14, UK Health Minister Matthew Hancock reported that a a new strain of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that spreads faster than the original form. The virus spreads more easily from person to person and is therefore more contagious, he said. Later World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the same strain was found in the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia.
