The Swiss Federal Assembly has legalized same-sex marriage. The Local writes about this.
According to the document, the country not only allows same-sex marriage, but also provides access to sperm banks for lesbian couples.
In the National Council (lower house of parliament), 136 deputies voted for the law, 48 against, 9 abstained. In the Council of Cantons (upper house), the project was supported by 24 deputies. The ultra-conservative Christian party Swiss Federal Democratic Union has already opposed the law and has pledged to hold a referendum on same-sex marriage.
Since 2007, Switzerland has been allowed to issue a “registered partnership” – a document for persons of the same sex. However, it did not allow same-sex couples to obtain citizenship or adopt children.
September 16 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that in The European Union violates the rights of the LGBT community. She called on all countries of the alliance to legalize same-sex families.
Besides Switzerland, same-sex marriage is recognized and allowed in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
