A resident of Belarus was imprisoned for a year for publicly insulting the president Alexander Lukashenko a>, reports ” Sputnik Belarus”.
The Khoiniki District Court of the Gomel Region considered the case in closed session. The defendant was found guilty of publicly insulting the president and was sentenced to one year imprisonment in correctional colony in a general regime, said the Supreme Court of the country.
Mass protests have been going on in Belarus for four months over the official results of the presidential elections, according to which Lukashenko, who ran for a sixth term, received 80 percent of the vote.
The first rallies were violently dispersed with the help of special equipment. A number of opposition politicians were arrested, others left Belarus.
The protesters demand the resignation of the country’s leadership, the holding of new and fair presidential elections, and the punishment of those responsible for the violence against the demonstrators.
