In the first weeks of 2021, there is a high risk of a new outbreak of coronavirus infections in Europe if the necessary measures are not taken during the New Year holidays. This is stated in statement posted on the site World Health Organization (WHO).
“Despite the fragile progress made, the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in the European Region. In the first weeks and months of 2021, there is a high risk of a further surge in incidence, and to prevent it, we will need to work together,” the WHO predicted.
The organization urged people to be extra vigilant in celebrating Christmas and New Years. She recommended meeting outdoors whenever possible, keeping physical distance and wearing masks.
However, in the case of home celebrations, WHO asks to limit the number of guests and provide good ventilation to reduce the risk of infection. “You may be embarrassed to wear masks and maintain physical distancing with friends and family, but this is very necessary for everyone to be healthy and safe,” the message emphasizes.
The organization added that in countries with a high incidence of COVID-19, serious consideration should be given to postponing or shortening church celebrations and Christmas services.
As of December 16, the number of coronavirus cases in Europe exceeded 22.3 million. In total, more than 490 thousand infected people have died in the region since the beginning of the pandemic.
