Couple weeded garden and found gold coins in flower bed for 21 million

A couple from the British region of New Forest found an ancient treasure while weeding their garden. The Times reported.

63 gold and one silver coins were buried in the flowerbed. According to experts, the market value of the find is about 220 thousand pounds (21.4 million rubles).

Most gold coins depict the Archangel Michael defeating the dragon. The oldest were minted during the reign of the English king Edward IV, who seized the throne during the War of the Scarlet and White Roses in 1461, the newest – with a contemporary Ivan the Terrible , King Henry VIII, who ruled until 1547.

Apparently, the coins were hidden around 1540. According to one version, this is due to the process of secularization of monasteries. In 1536, Henry VIII ordered the liquidation of monasteries with incomes of less than £ 200. As a result, about 800 monasteries were closed in England by 1540. According to another version, the money belonged to a merchant who was engaged in sea trade. This is indicated by the proximity of New Forest to major seaports.

Earlier it was reported that in the vicinity of the Slovak city of Piestany was discovered a large treasure of medieval coins. The discovery was made by a tourist who noticed uneven silver plates depicting a dragon under the roots of a fallen tree.
