It revealed attitude of Ukrainians to torture enemies

Every seventh Ukrainian considers it justified to use torture against enemies in war. This became known from a study conducted by the ZMINA Center for Human Rights and the Ilko Kucheriv Foundation for Democratic Initiatives, Strana.ua reports.

Most Ukrainians do not support the use of torture in an armed conflict. Thus, 38.6 percent of respondents are sure that this is a violation of the law, another 35.7 percent believe that this is contrary to the principles of humanity.

15.4 percent of Ukrainians have the opposite opinion. Among them, 8.8 percent believe that torture is possible, since the end justifies the means if it is necessary to obtain information. Another 6.6 percent said that torture is an adequate response to the actions of the enemy.

The poll was conducted from 6 to 19 October in all regions of Ukraine, except for the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions not controlled by the authorities. 2002 respondents were interviewed by the method of personal interview. The statistical error of the sample does not exceed 2.2 percent.

Previously released as part of the prisoner exchange between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics (DPR and LPR) told that in the building Security Service of Ukraine in Mariupol massively tortured people. They noted that the Ukrainian security forces “beat a lot and everywhere, poked them in the legs with a knife.” In addition, in the torture fighters of the Azov volunteer battalion who came specifically to mock the prisoners.
