Former opposition presidential candidate in Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya called on European countries to follow Lithuania to investigate crimes committed by the authorities in its homeland, according to Delfi.
On December 9, it became known that the General Prosecutor of Lithuania began a pre-trial investigation of possible crimes against humanity at the request of the citizen of Belarus Maksim Khoroshin, who claims that he was tortured by officers of the security forces in Minsk.
“We welcome the decision of the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office to initiate a criminal investigation into the case of Maksim Khoroshin within the framework of universal jurisdiction. We call on other countries to follow this initiative of Lithuania and start investigating the crimes of the regime against humanity,” said Tikhanovskaya and added that “none of cases cannot be forgotten. “
In Belarus, mass protests have been going on for four months due to the official results of the presidential elections, according to which the candidate for the sixth term Alexander Lukashenko got 80 percent of the vote, and Tikhanovskaya – 10 percent.
The first actions were violently dispersed using special means. Seven thousand people were detained, many of them told about beatings and torture in isolation wards. Several dead are known.
