Iran refuses to pay compensation to Ukraine for downed Boeing-737

Iran has withdrawn its proposal to pay compensation to the families of those killed in the crash of the Boeing-737 of Ukraine International Airlines, which was shot down in January near Tehran. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Yevgeniy Yenin , reports Gromadske.

According to him, the Iranian government refused to budget for next year 200 million euros for compensation. They wanted to allocate funds for this from the National Development Fund.

Yenin noted that negotiations with the Iranian side have not yet begun on the amount of compensation. At the same time, Ukraine’s position proceeds from the fact that it should largely depend on the circumstances of the disaster and on the degree of Iranian cooperation to ensure an objective investigation.

Earlier, the head of the Central Insurance of Iran Golamreza Soleimani said that the Ukrainian Boeing- 737 was insured by European companies, therefore, they must pay compensation. At the same time, the official representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abbas Mousavi stated that Tehran agrees to the payment of compensation.

January 8 Boeing 737-800 flew from Tehran to Kiev and was shot down immediately after takeoff. All 167 passengers and nine crew members were killed: citizens of Ukraine, Iran, Canada and other countries. Iran admitted that the plane was shot down by the military.
