Brazil reports first deadly fungus infection

Brazil has registered the country’s first case of infection with the deadly drug-resistant Candida auris fungus. This was reported by RIA Novosti citing the Brazilian sanitary regulator Anvisa.

“The fungus was identified in a catheter tip sample from a patient admitted to an adult intensive care unit at a hospital in Bahia,” the report said. The test result was confirmed in two laboratories.

Some strains of Candida auris are resistant to three main classes of antifungal drugs: polyenes, azoles, and echinocandins, as well as disinfectants. In addition, this fungus causes infections, including bloodstream infections, which can be fatal when accompanied by other diseases.

In 2019, a group of scientists from the United States and the Netherlands reported that the distribution The super fungus Candida auris across Earth is triggered by global warming. Despite the fact that fungi usually cannot reproduce at human body temperature, thanks to warming, Candida auris has adapted and learned to survive already at 37 degrees Celsius.
