Germany urges United States to abandon death penalty

Germany calls on the United States to abandon the death penalty, said the Ombudsman under the German government, Berbel Kofler. This was reported by RIA Novosti .

According to her, this is contrary to global trends. “The German government rejects the death penalty as a cruel and inhuman form of punishment under all circumstances. The death penalty means that wrong judgments cannot be corrected,” said Kofler.

The Ombudsman noted that Germany and its partners from the European Union have been holding an intensive campaign to abolish the death penalty worldwide. She added that this punishment is not a deterrent.

In 1976, the US Supreme Court reinstated the use of the death penalty. Since that time, more than 1.5 thousand prisoners have been punished in American prisons by killing more than 1.5 thousand prisoners, but of them only three are federal criminals, the rest of the cases were subject to the decision of local authorities. There are about 60 people sentenced to death in federal prisons.
