Prince Harry sues newspaper for libel

Prince Harry has sued the British tabloid The Mail on Sunday and his publisher Associated Newspapers for libel, according to The Guardian.

The documents were sent to the Supreme Court by lawyers for the prince and his wife Meghan Markle on November 27. It is noted that the details of the case will be made public in the coming weeks.

According to the newspaper, the lawsuit is related to an article published by The Mail on Sunday newspaper in October 2020. The story alleged that the Duke of Sussex was unable to maintain contact with the Royal Marines after he formally resigned from royal duties.

In October 2019, Meghan Markle filed a lawsuit against The Mail on Sunday for publishing their letters. In July, Markle lost the first round of the trial. After that, she also had to pay the costs of the publisher The Mail on Sunday – about 68 thousand pounds (6.8 million rubles). In the second round, Markle was again defeated. The High Court of London ordered the Duchess of Sussex to pay not only her own legal costs, which amounted to 139 thousand pounds (14 million rubles), but also the costs of her opponent, who spent 39 thousand pounds (four million rubles).

Since April 1, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have ceased to act as members of the British royal family. To be eligible to move to the United States, work and do business, they had to abandon the “Your Royal Highness” appeal, government funding and the Sussex Royal brand. At the end of April, Markle told her friends about the real reason for giving up royal privileges and moving to the United States. It was noted that she could not stand the harassment from the British yellow press.
