Parents of children who were mistakenly given a drug to stimulate hair growth demanded compensation. The Daily Mail reports.
About two years ago, pharmacies in the Spanish provinces of Granada, Cantabria and Valencia, instead of the drug omeprazole, used to inhibit the secretion of gastric acid, received the cosmetic product minoxidil with an incorrect label on the package. It was received by about 20 children suffering from indigestion. As a result, they developed hypertrichosis – a disease manifested in excess hair growth.
The parents of the affected children claim that the symptoms of hypertrichosis still persist. Photographs of a child from the Cantabrian city of Torrelavega show that after taking minoxidil, thick hair covered his upper back and arms.
The Spanish pharmaceutical company Farma-Química Sur SL was responsible for the confusion. The drug that provoked the disease was removed from sale in July 2019, and the manufacturer was temporarily revoked the license. Patients’ hair growth was expected to decrease after discontinuation of the medication.
In 2019 it was reported about an Indian schoolboy Lalita Patidar who suffers ” werewolf syndrome. ” The boy has congenital hypertrichosis, due to which his face is covered with hair. Despite being rude from strangers, he got used to his looks and gained popularity in school.
