A meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere and exploded on the evening of December 2, leaving a bright trail in the sky over Lake Ontario, located on the border of the United States and Canada, reports CTV News.
A researcher at the University of Western Ontario Denis Vida reported that a basketball-sized meteor entered the planet’s atmosphere at an angle of 45 degrees about 50 kilometers north of the US city of Syracuse, New York. “We are still waiting for more accurate data, but for now we tend to believe that the approximate size of the object was about 10 centimeters,” he said, adding that scientists are in no hurry to draw any conclusions due to uncertainty.
Representative of NASA meteoroid research department Bill Cook in an interview NBC News specified that the speed of the celestial body was 56 thousand miles per hour (about 90 thousand kilometers in hour). However, due to the small number of videos of the meteor, it is difficult to determine its trajectory. Cook noted that the meteor disintegrated with a loud bang that could be heard throughout New York.
It is noted that the celestial body was captured from the CN Tower in Toronto.
Earlier it was reported that a local resident in Smolensk saw in the sky above the city a bright flash of unknown origin, which was mistaken for a meteorite. The DVR recorded a strange phenomenon on video.
