A tropical fish caught in 2016 off the coast of Australia turned out to be the oldest in the world, reports The West Australian.
The 81-year-old spotted macaolor lived near Rowley Reefs, 300 kilometers from Broome in Western Australia. It was caught by researchers who are studying the lifespan of tropical fish.
Also, scientists managed to catch 79-year-old red snapper and 11 more fish that have lived for more than 60 years. To determine their age, they were killed and the growth zones on the otolith (ear bone) were counted.
In 2018 it was reported that scientists learned about the death of the Australian spider- a long-liver whose life has been followed since the 1970s. The female of the species Gaius villosus, common in western Australia, lived to be 43 years old.
