Pope Francis prayed for the former Argentina player and coach Diego Maradona , reports the Vatican News, citing a statement from the Holy See’s press service.

“Pope Francis knows about Diego Maradona’s death, remembering warmly meeting with him and praying, as he did in recent days, when he learned about the health of a football player,” said the director of the press center Matteo Bruni.

Maradona’s death became known on November 25. The information was confirmed by his lawyer, and the first to report the incident were the journalists of the Argentinean Clarin. In November, Maradona was hospitalized with a cerebral hemorrhage and was later discharged. Death occurred as a result of a heart attack.
