The Austrian village of Fukking (Fucking) will change its name due to the ridicule of tourists reports edition Die Presse.
From 2021, this place will be called Fugging. Despite the fact that the pronunciation of the village differs from the pronunciation of a curse word with a similar spelling in English, tourists still read the name as “obscene”. The publication notes that no other town in Austria has attracted as much attention as this village in recent years. Visitors constantly joked incorrectly about the village and specially came there for a day to take pictures in front of the sign with the name.
Some even stole signs, says the mayor of the town Andrea Holzner: as a result, it had to be concreted. The mayor confirmed that the village will be renamed in 2021, but she did not want to comment on this in detail again.
In the village of Fukking, they started thinking about changing the name back in 2012. From the middle of the 20th century, English-speaking tourists began to come there more and more often, who find the name of the village funny.
