The pilots who bombed government buildings during the 2016 coup d’etat attempt in Turkey were given life sentences. Anadolu agency reports.
It is noted that the court sentenced the former pilot of the Turkish Air Force Hussein Turk and the former Major of the 143rd Squadron of the Turkish Air Force Ali Karabulut to 79 life sentences in a maximum security prison. The pilots who carried out airstrikes against the Aviation Security Administration were sentenced to eight life sentences.
On July 15, 2016, a coup took place in Turkey, as a result of which 248 people died, and more than 2.7 thousand were injured. Of the 34 killed on the bridge, all but two of the police were civilians.
A few days after the coup attempt, a state of emergency was introduced in the country, which has already been repeatedly extended. The authorities attribute this need to the fight against terrorist threats. In particular, we are talking about the FETO organization headed by the preacher Fethullah Gulen hiding in the USA. The leaders of the European Union, as well as representatives of the Turkish opposition, oppose the regime. In their opinion, it threatens freedom and human rights in the country.
After these events, mass purges took place in the republic in the authorities, special services, courts, the army, and educational institutions. Since then, the country’s authorities have arrested more than 160 thousand people, more than 150 thousand people have been dismissed from the army and government service.
