Serbian patriarch Irenaeus dies of coronavirus

Patriarch of Serbia Orthodox Church Irenaeus has died of coronavirus. This was announced by the president of the republic Alexander Vuchich , TASS .

The 90-year-old hierarch was hospitalized on November 4 at the Karaburma military hospital with COVID-19. Initially, Irenaeus was supposed to be discharged in two weeks, but on Sunday, November 15, his condition worsened.

Patriarch Irenaeus was born on August 28, 1930 in the village of Vidova, and received the name Miroslav in baptism. In 1951 he graduated from the theological seminary in Prizren. Then he graduated from the theological faculty of the University of Belgrade and postgraduate studies at the theological faculty of the University of Athens. In October 1959 he took monastic vows. In May 1974, he was elected vicar bishop of the Patriarch of Serbia. Elected patriarch in 2010.
