Many food products are affected such as beef, cocoa, coffee, palm oil or soy. Their import will be prohibited if these products come from deforested lands after December 2020.
The European Parliament and the Member States of the European Union (EU) reached an agreement on Tuesday, December 6, to prohibit the importation of several products, such as cocoa, coffee or soy, when they contribute to deforestation.
Palm oil, wood, beef and rubber are also concerned, as well as several associated materials (leather, chocolate, furnishings, paper, charcoal …).
Their import will be prohibited if these products come from deforested lands after December 2020, the parliament said in a press release. The EU is the second destructive in the world of tropical forests with its imports.
“This is the most ambitious political initiative in the world to deal with the problem of imported deforestation, recently underlined the European environment commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevicius. As a European, we show that we take our responsibilities. “
