The Qatari television channel Al-Jazira announced Tuesday, December 6, that it had submitted to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) a file incriminating the Israeli army for the death of his Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. The chain says that the elements transmitted to the ICC highlight “new evidence and video images showing that Shireen Abu Akleh and his colleagues were drawn directly by the Israeli occupation forces” May 11.
That day, the star journalist of Al-Jazira had been shot in the head during an Israeli army raid in the Jénine refugee camp, in northern West Bank . It was equipped with a bulletproof vest with the mention “press” and a helmet.
“The assertion of the Israeli authorities that Shireen was mistakenly killed in an exchange of fire is completely unfounded,” said Al-Jazira. A journalist from the France-Presse agency in The Hague saw a lawyer representing the chain entering the ICC headquarters to submit the file. The Court nevertheless has no obligation to seize the file.
The Israeli army, which has occupied the West Bank since 1967, recognized for the first time in September that there was “a strong possibility” for Shireen Abu Akleh, who had Palestinian and American nationality, killed by one of his soldiers. The latter nevertheless dismisses any legal proceedings. The Israeli investigation into the death of the journalist was classified.
