The cost of schooling should increase by 7.5 % at the start of the next school year to take into account “real inflation” suffered by the school, in search of financial resources.

A year after his election at the head of Sciences Po Paris, would Mathias Vicherat have forgotten his campaign promises? He who had undertaken not to increase tuition fees is preparing to endorse their increase for the start of the 2023 school year – up to 7.5 % – during a board of directors, on December 14.
Like other higher education establishments, the Parisian political study Institute faces the energy crisis and inflation, for an additional cost valued at some 4 million euros. At the time of completing the provisional budget for 2023, the board of directors of the National Foundation of Political Science (FNSP) therefore provided a parade, at least algebraic: a new calculation of the tuition fees corrected for the level of ” real inflation “suffered during 2022.
The calculation, drawn up in March, actually resulted in an increase of 9.46 %, an additional sum to pay from 1,300 euros and 1,700 euros per year for students of Bachelor and Master S ‘Actitant respectively of 13,190 euros and 18,260 euros in registration – the maximum annual amounts practiced by the school. These students, of easy origin, represent 25 % of the postbac workforce and 21 % of that in Master, specifies the establishment.
The proposal, voted unanimously less than two absences, was only turned on the benches of amphitheatres only after the start of the school year, “without any consultation being organized with student organizations”, reports Raphaël Zaouati, elected student of the Nova union at the Institute’s Council. 2>
misunderstanding and anger
This Tuesday, December 6, the budgetary trajectory was confirmed by the management of Sciences Po, which however made a gesture: if the board of directors of the FNSP does not veto it on December 14, the costs will therefore only increase only 7.5 % at the start of the school year. Or a supplement to be paid each year equivalent to 860 euros per year for students belonging to the highest tranche, and 300 euros for students submitted to lower rates, according to information collected by MO12345lemonde.
Among the students, misunderstanding and anger are in order, this decision marking yet another episode of bidding of the cost of their education. Since 2004, the year of the transition to modular tuition fees according to the parents’ income, the costs only increase, notes Anissa Chehbib, president of the UNEF Sciences Po. “They arose up to a maximum of 4 000 euros and they jumped 60 % in 2009, with an average contribution of students of 5,300 euros, she recalls. Between 2008 and 2015, the amount of the upper tranche increased from 5,300 euros to 10,040 euros in bachelor and 5,300 euros at 13,820 euros in a master’s degree. “
