IBM will help the new Japanese semiconductor state company produce advanced 2-nm chips to increase the role of the country in the industry and diversify the global supply chain.
ibm announced partnership in the development of the young Japanese manufacturer Rapidus Corporation, which will allow the manufacturer to the commercialization of the 2-nm IBM process for mass production. It is expected that cooperation will bring results after 2025. It is still unknown where Rapidus will build a chip factory in Japan.
“This is the long -awaited international cooperation that is really necessary for Japan to play a vital role again in the supply chain of semiconductors,” said Atsui Koyka, president and chief executive director of Rapidus.
According to IBM, its 2-nm processors can provide 45% more performance or consume 75% less energy than 7-nm Chips Taiwan TSMC and South Korean Samsung.
The Japanese government announced the creation of Rapidus in November 2022 and is expected to invest 70 billion yen into the company ($ 500 million). This amount will go for research, development, design, production and sale of advanced processors and graphic processors.
