With Place de la Paix, the French videographers of Twitch tighten their elbows in the fight against cyberbullying. The project, which allows them to pool their user lists banished on the live video platform, was revealed on Tuesday December 20 on the Rebeuder streamer, which has more than 1 million subscribers, accompanied by Aminemature, 1.8 million subscribers to the clock.

“There is a lot of sexism, misogyny in stream. The girls (…) do not have the right to breathe. We could not continue our activity without trying, on our scale, to change that”, Thus declared Rebeudeter. The young man explained that he discovered the extent of the phenomenon in contact with the Maghla videographer, who is regularly the target of cyberharcelers.

“collective intelligence”

Place de la Paix thus rests “on an under-exploited resource on Twitch: collective intelligence”, praises the site. The device is added to another system already implemented by the streaming platform, which allows moderators to spot people deemed problematic on their chat before on other channels, without it deleting their messages automatically.

The Amazon platform is often criticized for the uncontrolled development of the harassment of videographers, and particularly women. The claimed objective of Place de la Paix is thus to discourage users who only target streamers: with this tool, people identified as cyberharcelers in their chats will also be expelled from other chains held by men, such as those of Aminemature or Rebeuder, who confide to be spared by this cyberbullying problem.

This action echoes the tradition on Twitch of so-called “community” moderation, that is to say which is based on teams of moderators, whether professional or volunteers. It is distinguished from moderation by automatic recognition of problematic words, which is easier to get around (by simple spelling changes for example) or subject to errors. The deployment of Place de la Paix will also be accompanied by a discussion space within a Discord server, promise these creators, in order to “refine the tool”.

This spontaneous initiative has aroused a large number of positive reactions, but also some reservations. Some poorly enthusiastic Internet users have notably criticized the risk of arbitrary banishment as well as the potential hazards to which videographers are exposed in terms of security by using a tool outside the platform. The tool also remains circumscribed in Twitch while the cyberbulling of streamers also deports to other channels. On November 19 for example, after a football match broadcast on Twitch, it was on Twitter that the Ultia videographer was faced with a violent wave of hostile and threatening messages.
