At home in Netherlands will be heated with help of data

Residential buildings in the Groningen region in the Netherlands will soon be heated by the spent heat centers of data processing centers.

The operator of the data center (data center) QTS united with the local utility service Warmtestad to connect its facility to the centralized heat supply network of Groningen. This required the construction of a specialized installation, which captures and concentrates the heat generated by the data center before its distribution on existing water pipes.

The data center effectively replaces the central boiler for heating water, which is used to heat houses, enterprises and institutions in the northern district of Groningen.

In addition to QTS, the BYTESNET Dutch company, which specializes in data processing centers, has combined with Boston LTD and WARMTESTAD for re -use of the spent heat of the data center for heating houses in the Groningen area.

BYTESNET uses 21-inch OCP-compatible Supermicro servers, which were immersed in the Asperitas immersion cooling tanks. These tanks are filled with dielectric fluid, which cools the components due to convection. The captured heat is then dumped into the district water supply system of the city

By 2026, Warmtestad expects to heat more than 10,000 households with the help of centers. Also, the heat supply of the data center eliminates the need for natural gas, while reducing the emissions CO2.
