In Russia, they allowed to use 5.9-6.4 GHz frequencies for Wi-Fi 6e

The State Commission for Radio frequencies decided to allocate frequencies of 5.9-6.4 GHz for the Wi-Fi 6E communication standard in offices and residential buildings, the newspaper “Kommersant” writes.

The mincifers confirmed the information, noting that the range will increase the speed of the Internet in closed rooms. This is achieved by using the frequency of 6 GHz and an increase in the number of channels.

Wi-Fi 6 support devices have begun to be certified in Russia since the beginning of 2020, and in 2021, systems with Wi-Fi 6E support were entered the market. This standard is supported by all recent models of Apple, Samsung, Honor, Xiaomi, etc., as well as ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, etc. However, the vendors turned off the functionality for Russia, since the technology was not legalized in the country.

“In Russia for Wi-Fi, the frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz were previously used. Practice showed that Wi-Fi in 5 GHz is significantly faster and more stable than in 2.4 GHz. New bands in 6 GHz will be Even faster and will allow to develop gigabit speeds into one user “”, explained Oleg Ivanov.

In addition, in the context of weakening the supply of equipment for LTE networks from a number of Wi-Fi vendors, it can partially compensate for the decrease in the throughput of cellular networks, Oleg Ivanov believes.

Among the vendors whose devices support Wi-Fi 6e are TP-Link, Zyxel, Asus, Netgear and others. From the point of view of the availability of routers with the support of the Wi-Fi 6e in Russia, there are no big problems, Ivanov noted. Most of the routers are produced by Chinese and Taiwanese companies that did not introduce prohibitions and restrictions on imports to Russia.

The mincifers confirmed that the routers “act in sufficient quantities for existing logistics chains.”

The production of Russian routers with the corresponding characteristics “takes time”, the ministry said, but “already existing.”

Communications operators support the allocation of new frequencies for Wi-Fi, but they doubt that the technology will be able to seriously compete with LTE. “There is no“ normal mobility ”in it, but for a partial unloading of the data transfer network in places of mass location of Wi -Fi subscribers, it is quite suitable,” says Vimpelkom, explaining that it can be, for example, about large shopping centers or concerts halls.
