engineer Kubernetes Justin Harrison conducted a survey > and found out which operating systems are the most popular for development.
The use of Linux as the main operating system has steadily increased for the last 4 years – from 23% in 2018 to 40.2% in 2022. In addition, in 2021, Linux was used more often than MacOS. In 2022, the difference between them was 9% in favor of Linux.
The final statistics of operating systems for “professional use”:
- Windows: 48.82%;
- Linux: 39.89%;
- macos: 32.97%.
Harrison noted that in addition to the survey results, do not forget about more than a million users in all cloud -based developing media on the basis of Linux (for example, GitHub Workspaces), as well as 15% of WSL users in Windows and all Docker users (which uses virtual Linux machine).
“It is safe to say that in the process of development, experts use Linux more than other OS,” Harrison concluded.
