The US Department of Energy (DOE) will issue a grant in the amount of $ 33 million to researchers who can use artificial intelligence and machine learning in the thermonuclear industry.
The purpose of the project is to force artificial intelligence to speed up the analysis and modeling of thermonuclear energy and plasma physics used in several DOE experiments. Agency seeks offers for use AI/ML in this direction, Paying special attention to approaches that can support the development of a pilot thermonuclear installation over the next few decades.
Scientists of the US Department of Energy believe that AI/ML can radically change it by getting out of previously lost information from large data sets created during these experiments and clarifying thermonuclear models.
The Ministry of Energy has invested $ 11 million per year in these studies over the next 3 years.
DOE plans to finance from 6 to 10 projects and limited funding at a level of $ 1 to $ 2.5 million. The department noted that, depending on the number of grants provided, the actual amount may be much less. The deadline for submitting a preliminary application for grant is January 31, and official applications must be submitted no later than March 15.
