The number of irregular entries in the European Union increased in 2022 by 64 % compared to the previous year, reaching the highest level since 2016, announced Friday, January 13 The European border surveillance agency, Frontex .
According to the agency, 330,000 irregular admissions were recorded in 2022, including 45 % on the road to Western Balkans. The number of Syrian nationals concerned has practically doubled at 94,000.
“This is the second year in a row with a sharp increase in the number of irregular admissions,” said Frontex in a press release, adding that the Syrians, Afghans and Tunisians represented 47 % of irregular entries together in 2022.
On the Western Balkan route 145,600 passages were recorded, an increase of 136 % compared to the previous year.
The central Mediterranean road, the second most borrowed, saw the number of passages exceed 100,000, an increase of more than 50 %. About 10 % of irregular entries were made by women and approximately 9 % by minors.
