The case considered by the US Supreme Court on the expansion of the responsibility of Internet platforms for the materials published on them can “turn the Internet.” This is stated in the judicial statement of Google, reports fox.
We are talking about a lawsuit, which in 2016 was filed by the family of a woman who died in a terrorist attack. The plaintiffs accused social networks of promoting extremist posts financed by terrorists.
According to American law, the Internet platforms are not responsible for the posts published by third parties. However, relatives of the victim of the attack claim that this does not exempt them from liability for the appearance of appropriate content in the recommendations.
According to Google, the fulfillment of the requirements of the plaintiffs can break the entire system of the network and moderation of content. The technological giant claims that reducing liability restriction measures can lead to the fact that in order to avoid problems, large Internet companies will block all controversial content, including “controversial political speeches”.
On the other hand, small companies will prefer to refuse to modulate content in order to avoid responsibility for any decisions. As a result, the network will fill the portals that do not control content.
