It took two years for Joe Biden to move to the border with Mexico. The American president finally corrected this restraint by going on Sunday, January 8, in El Paso (Texas). A very supervised visit, where the images had to be enough for themselves.

It was a question of illustrating the revival of the White House for the migratory question, a sensitive subject in public opinion, very popular with the Republicans. Joe Biden has embarked on an intense sequence on this issue, started on January 5. On that day, the American president presented emergency measures, intended to reduce the number of undocumented migrants entering the country and responding to the accusations of laxity.

These measures aim to expand a device already adopted for nationals of Venezuela in October 2022, and which proven itself in three months. Henceforth, announced the White House, up to 30,000 people from Nicaragua, Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela will be able to come to the United States every month for a period of two years and receive a work permit, but to condition of being sponsored by an eligible person and after examining their file. Those who try to pass undocumented will be turned back.

Mexico has agreed to welcome 30,000 people a month, expelled from the United States and can no longer claim to find refuge for five years. On the material level, on the American side, the control means will be reinforced and a mobile application launched to oblige migrants passing through Mexico to register and make an appointment without pouring into mass points at the border. The White House thus hopes that the illegal and lucrative sectors of the smugglers will add to it.

a complete blockage at the Congress on Immigration

For a long time, Joe Biden neglected this migratory question, abandoning him to his vice-president, Kamala Harris, and the federal services concerned, overwhelmed. This theme was one of the weaknesses of the Democrats during the Midterms campaign last year. Especially since the number of arrests exploded: 1.7 million in 2021, 2.4 million in 2022. The march towards the north of migrants is explained by various factors: climatic, economic, as well as the will to flee repressive diets or decrepitude states.

From the start of his presidency, Joe Biden was faced with a complete blockage at the Congress on Immigration. Consequently, how to combine firmness and humanity, mastery of the border and asylum right? How to avoid cruel images of the Trump era, and the 5,000 children separated from their parents, while preserving its renewal device, called the “Title 42”?
