Game of Thrones, Wire, Sopranos: big HBO series have disappeared from French screens

Tony Soprano and his family, Eddard Stark and his dynasty, Jimmy McNulty, his collaborators and his hierarchy, regret to announce their disappearance. On December 31, 2022, at midnight, at a time when traffic jams are jumping and cars ignited, the six seasons of sopranos, the 73 episodes of Game of Thrones, the 60 hours of The Wire passed out from the platform OCS form, which has been holding them for years at the disposal of his subscribers.

This retreat is the consequence of the expiration of the agreement which linked the French subsidiary of Orange to HBO, the American paid channel, itself a subsidiary of the Warner Bros-Discovery group. More recent HBO productions, House of the Dragon, Mare of Easttown, Barry or the latest season (but not the first two) are still available on OCS. Such as dead stars, they will extend one after the other over the year 2023.

By way of consolation, Warner France convey the following message: “The Game of Thrones series and many programs in the HBO catalog are available in DVD, Blu-ray, 4K ultra-HD and digital boxes.” To something kindly outdated (and undoubtedly a little hypocritical) in this encouragement to regain the path of large cultural areas, to dust off its DVD player – establishments and equipment that streaming had to make obsolete.

Fierce competition

Anyway, if you were caught off guard in the binge, just wait a bit. That the Multinational Burbank (California) finally unveils its strategy for France. While the Hollywood majors – Disney, Paramount and even Universal (which can be found among the channels offered on Prime Video) – try to compete with Netflix on the French market, Warner Bros -Discovery continues to retreat the deadlines.

The launch of its platform, which would offer the contents of Warner (mainly fiction) and Discovery (mainly reality TV), is now planned for 2024. In the meantime, a transitional agreement will be Found between the American multinational and an operational platform in France so that the new features offered by HBO (the channel) and HBO Max (the platform) are available. The Last of Us, the video inspired by video games, which will make its American debut on January 15, should be the first production to benefit from this agreement.
